As the leaves start turning and that crisp autumn breeze rolls in, it’s the perfect time to show your hardscape some love. With just a few easy paver maintenance steps, you can keep your driveway, patio or walkways looking their best all season long.

1. Sweep or Blow Away Debris

Fallen leaves, twigs, and other debris might look charming at first, but if they linger, they can stain your pavers over time, especially when moisture settles in. A quick sweep or pass with a leaf blower now and then keeps your hardscape clean and free from stains.

2. Wash Gently

For dirt and grime that won’t budge, mix some mild soap with warm water and lightly scrub with a stiff-bristle brush or rinse with your hose. If you use a pressure washer, be gentle and tilt the nozzle at an angle (about 45°) to avoid washing out the fine sand between your paver joints (that’s the ‘secret glue’ keeping everything aligned).

3. Bonus Tip: Refresh the Joint Sand

If you spot gaps between your pavers, a little extra jointing sand can go a long way. Loose sand not only invites weeds, but it can also cause your pavers to shift over time.

4. Move Heavy Items & Furniture

Lawn furniture, grills, or large planters can leave marks if they’re left sitting all winter. A quick move to a dry area, adding rubber pads or furniture risers, will save you the hassle of tackling rust or stains later.

5. Check Drainage Before Frost

Fall is the perfect time to clear out leaves and debris from drains and downspouts. Standing water on frozen hardscapes isn’t fun, and keeping water flowing helps protect your pavers from damage.

6. Bonus Tip: Seal for Extra Protection

Sealing is optional, but it can boost colour and provide a light stain-repellent finish. We recommend waiting at least a year before sealing new pavers. If you decide to do it, ensure your surface is spotless and completely dry before the first frost. Remember that temperatures must stay above 10°C, even overnight, for the sealant to cure properly. Typically, resealing every 3–5 years will keep your hardscape looking its best.

In a Nutshell

  • Sweep, rinse, protect the joints, and move furniture off your stones.
  • A little seasonal care now means less hassle later and more time to enjoy your beautiful hardscape when spring rolls around.

Enjoy the season (and your outdoor spaces)!
